The Broadcast Display

Recently we have completed designing, fabricating, and installing a broadcast display design for Northern Arizona University. This form is representative of our complete strong set style of broadcast display design. The parts that make this display fantastic are it’s colorful translucence, the simple but visually rich graphic panels, glowing backlit columns, vibrant point lights, and rich wood laminate surfaces.

Custom Set Design

While this set is similar to our Complete Strong Set style of broadcast display, every part of it is custom made upon order. If you’re looking for something to add some visual power to your broadcast, we can do anything you have in mind. Do not feel limited by space, size, colors, materials, deadlines, or concepts. Slightly less wide angle news desk

Today we get to add some proper (almost) images of the smaller version of our Wide Angle News Desk. This 8′ wide version is more affordable and takes up less space than the 10′ wide version with the only sacrifice being less anchors can fit at one time. The Wide Angle News Desk is the most recent of our TV set design furniture components, and one of our very favorites. Even this smaller desk version can comfortably fit 4 people for any type of broadcast such as interview, discussion board, webcast, podcast, news cast, talk shows, or product reviews.

IRS Criminal Investigations

Recently we took a trip to Washington, DC to install a set design we created for IRS Criminal Investigations. The set was designed, as you will see in the images, to fill the space as much as possible for 3 different positions tailored to internal broadcast for the CI division of the IRS. This special closed broadcast goes to the 100 or so people in the same building, and secured to the nationwide divisions numbering some 2400 people.

Set Design Materials

This set design makes use of red and blue translucent vinyls applied to PETG, large vinyl solvent printed graphics, and elegant woodgrain laminates. The framework that all of these materials are applied to is 18ga cold rolled 1″ square steel tubing that has been powedercoated. All materials are connected using aplix’s hook and loop (like velcro) for easy changing of graphics and panels.

SMall Beacon Broadcast News Anchor Desk

We have just completed a teeny little news broadcast anchor desk for Beacon School District in New York, NY. The main body of the broadcast desk is blue laminates. The top is black laminate with a silver edging applied. The thing that really jumps out about this desk is the school district logo on the front. A solvent printed bulldog applied to quarter inch Sintra which was then cut out and held off the desk’s face by more Sintra that was hidden behind the graphic is what really stands out (pun intended) about this desk.

Our Newest TV Set Design for a Broadcast Studio

Henry Ford Broadcast Set Design

Some images of our newest set to leave the shop floor headed for the Henry Ford broadcast studio. This small but potent TV studio set is made with lots of love, powdercoated steel, wood laminates, recessed lighting, translucent PETG sheets covered in translucent vinyl, shiny stuff, silver stuff, and glass. We love it, and were sad to see it go.

Translucence in Set Design

A constant problem in broadcast studio design is the size of the space available for the set. An area may seem ample for any purpose, but once you plan for the cameras, lighting, control space, various equipment, storage, grid, fire and building regulations, seating, and so forth… not so much space. There are a few ways to deal with this problem, but for the sake of brevity, lets just cover one.

Using the proper materials for a design can be a great way to increase the amount of perceived space. Translucent materials in particular are great because the blur of lighting and set components trick the viewer’s eye into thinking it is seeing a greater amount of depth than is actually present in the broadcast studio. If the talent for the show is in perfectly crisp focus, and the background panels appear blurred, the effect reads at an increased distance between the newscasters and the walls behind them. Careful selection of set design materials is key in achieving this visual style.

A New Broadcast Studio Design for South-South News

This week we sent out a set designed and built by us for the South South News broadcast out of NY proper. The broadcast studio set consists of huge graphic panels, blue translucent vinyl on PETG, silver powercoated framing, translucent clear acrylic, laminates, and many other materials.

This set was a challenge as it is in a somewhat small space for broadcast. However, with careful planning and schematics, we managed to create a broadcast studio set that really fit the space, both dimensionally and visually. The cameras have many angles of variety to shoot different hosts or shows with differing backgrounds for each. Happy us, happy client, overall goodness. TV Set Design for GLC

The Images

Most of our out of town clients promise us pictures once the set design has been completely lit and prepared for broadcast. This is always an exciting concept for us, due to the fact that often we are already back in our home city of Charlotte by the time the lighting company is finished lighting the set that we designed and fabricated. So far, we have had around 3 clients send us pictures (in 25 years).

So, these couple images are exciting for us as they are from the third aforementioned client. Enjoy

The Materials

Something fun about this set design is the aluminum surfaces we made in shop, using a wire brush with a CNC router. We essentially made a vector file with wavy lines, and then fed that to the CNC router and it’s wire brush hovering over a sheet of aluminum. As you can see in the upper image, this adds a great texture to the material. What you can’t see in the picture is that the aluminum’s specular highlights change as you pan around the scene. Certainly a plus.

Other than the treatment of the aluminum panels, this set is fairly common fur us in materials. We used PETG, acrylics, powdercoated metals, translucent vinyls, printed graphics, and carpet. All fabrication was done in-house.

The Client: Creation Science Evangelism

It’s always great to see our clients so happy (as this picture so clearly proves). This particular TV set design was created for Creation Science Evangelism, also known as God Quest. The client unloaded the shipped crates, and set up the entire set themselves, proving both the client’s capability and the ease of use of our sets. This image was taken while they were still getting the lighting set just as they wanted it, but it looks really great to us.

The Components of the TV Set Design

The parts that went together to form this great set are all available on this site, with upfront ballpark pricing. The final design consisted of our Elliptic News Desk with a monitor for the talent to sit behind, and a variant on our Broadcast Set Design package titled the Complete Strong Set. With some back and forth between the client and our design crew talking about colors and textures, the design was approved and we began construction.

Custom News Desk for Adidas Race Day

Custom News Desk for Adidas Race Day

This week our company sent out a custom desk built by our crew for Adidas. This custom news desk focuses on a broadcast for Race Day and comfortably seats 3 talent/commentators. An interesting feature of this desk is the step/sign component you see in the front center. This sign-cube combination is positioned in front of the desk for this shot, but for versatility it could be used as a tabletop sign, or as a hint to where the event is, separate from the main news desk. Completed, the custom news desk was lightweight, attractive, durable, and extremely portable.

Recently we completed the design and construction of a display for the Angelo State University’s broadcast studio. This studio display will comfortably seat a news/discussion panel of 3 with a fantastic engaging backdrop and many different options for camera angles.

The images are solvent prints on a backlit vinyl applied to PETG materials, and attached to the silver powdercoated frames with velcro. This enables the images to be quickly switched out, or replaced with a completely different type of material for a new feel or a different broadcast. Blue acrylic, woodgrain and silver laminates were also used on the display. The translucent materials prepare the set for gorgeous studio lighting effects. This shot was taken in our shop, so we didn’t have the wonderful studio lighting. Just a few lights on the floor and such to try to show the effect of the display’s materials.

We have been creating broadcast studio displays for many years, and have refined our process every year. As it stands now, we can have 3d renderings of what the client wants in their email often within 24 hours. Upon client approval, our shop is set up to create studio displays like this in a few weeks compared to the months required by similar companies. We do the woodworking, cnc routing, metalworking, welding, painting, plastics, printing, design, and many other services in-house. The advantage this gives us is the total lack of up charging for services provided to us from other companies. We just do it all here.

Another great advantage with our process is how modular every piece of these studio displays are. Feeling creative? You can rearrange the frames for a different look. Tired of the appearance of your set? You don’t need a whole new one, you can just order different materials to surface it in. Is your studio shared or temporary? Does your studio display need to be shipped? The frames, with surfaces, are only about 1.5 inches thick, and can be stacked up in a corner or on a palette. Worried about cost? Our studio displays aren’t affordable because they are made of cheap materials, they are affordable because our shop is so streamlined to create them. The materials are high quality, and the workmanship is too. We doubt that you can find another company’s product comparable regarding packing, quality of materials and workmanship, modularity, ease of movement, design, printing, planning, and cost.
