Angelo State University Studio Display. CLick for a higher quality image!

Recently we completed the design and construction of a display for the Angelo State University’s broadcast studio. This studio display will comfortably seat a news/discussion panel of 3 with a fantastic engaging backdrop and many different options for camera angles.

The images are solvent prints on a backlit vinyl applied to PETG materials, and attached to the silver powdercoated frames with velcro. This enables the images to be quickly switched out, or replaced with a completely different type of material for a new feel or a different broadcast. Blue acrylic, woodgrain and silver laminates were also used on the display. The translucent materials prepare the set for gorgeous studio lighting effects. This shot was taken in our shop, so we didn’t have the wonderful studio lighting. Just a few lights on the floor and such to try to show the effect of the display’s materials.

We have been creating broadcast studio displays for many years, and have refined our process every year. As it stands now, we can have 3d renderings of what the client wants in their email often within 24 hours. Upon client approval, our shop is set up to create studio displays like this in a few weeks compared to the months required by similar companies. We do the woodworking, cnc routing, metalworking, welding, painting, plastics, printing, design, and many other services in-house. The advantage this gives us is the total lack of up charging for services provided to us from other companies. We just do it all here.

Another great advantage with our process is how modular every piece of these studio displays are. Feeling creative? You can rearrange the frames for a different look. Tired of the appearance of your set? You don’t need a whole new one, you can just order different materials to surface it in. Is your studio shared or temporary? Does your studio display need to be shipped? The frames, with surfaces, are only about 1.5 inches thick, and can be stacked up in a corner or on a palette. Worried about cost? Our studio displays aren’t affordable because they are made of cheap materials, they are affordable because our shop is so streamlined to create them. The materials are high quality, and the workmanship is too. We doubt that you can find another company’s product comparable regarding packing, quality of materials and workmanship, modularity, ease of movement, design, printing, planning, and cost.

Broadcast Design - webcast for Rowdy.com

Recently we had a rare opportunity; we got to photograph one of our broadcast designs while fully lit. Usually, the lighting design team comes in after we do, and so we almost never get to go back out to the location once lighting is complete to acquire broadcast grade images. This makes us sad. However, this time our client was right down the street, so we stopped by after the lighting setup was completed by Andrew Fisher’s team, and managed to get some great shots.

This particular broadcast design was for Rowdy.com, a webcast report with an edge that focuses on sports. We planned out the new set in 3D applications, so that the clients could get a really great concept of what we were designing. After a little bit of back and forth about colors and design components, the final renderings were approved, and we built the set in our facility in Charlotte, NC. Upon completion, the broadcast design was dismantled, packed up, shipped, and installed at the client’s studio. We have gone through this process with hundreds of clients, but usually they are in other states or countries. This one being so close by was a fun picture opportunity.

We’ve got new and interesting news! We have just finished creating forums to address questions regarding the TV set design, broadcast studio, studio lighting, and news desk branches of broadcast industry. Our goal is to provide a repository for knowledge regarding these topics in an easy to understand format for anyone that is curious about aspects of broadcast set design. This will most likely make our lives a little easier as well, due to the amount of questions we answer via email from students, veterans in the field, and those curious about breaking in to broadcasting. This way, any questions can be simply and comprehensively answered by a simple search.

It gets better. The TV Set Design Forum will not only be staffed by the tvsetdesigns.com crew, but also from the professionals from Gelbach Designs, and experts from companies that Gelbach Designs and TV Set Designs works with closely on projects. This allows the area of expertise represented in these forums to cover design, lighting, construction, installation, shipping, theater, fabrication, broadcast, videographic, photographic… I’m rambling. It makes our expertise cover an area that completely envelops TV and broadcast set design. TV Set Designs - A new set style added to our catalogue

We have added a new style to our catalog of complete TV set designs: The Complete Array Set. This complete broadcast studio set design mixes multiple talent locations, height changes, varying levels of translucency, colors, and various substrates to create a truly versatile Swiss Army knife of a set. This layout provides for a great number of talent and camera positions– from risers or floor level to sitting or standing positions. Most of the components stand on their own, so they may be moved around to handle nearly any spacial problem, or just to give a new look to the set.
