Translucent Materials
  • Jeremy_EccardJeremy_Eccard January 2011 +1 -1

I am looking for any information you can provide on what translucent materials you guys use for your Curved and Straight Frames. I figured it is some type of plastic but am not sure. I recently worked on a tv show in Washington DC area and the producer mentioned you guys. Their frames were 4'x8' with frosted material.

Also, do you guys sell the materials used? If not could you point me in the right direction? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeremy, we use petg 1/16" non glare sheets, or P-95 frosted plexiglas 1/8in (it is a little too stiff to bend well if you are holding the sheet with velcro) or we use 1/8" plexiglas with matte overlaminate like for inkjet prints too. Oh yea we use clear coroplast too, it's only about $15. per sheet where everything else is closer to $45.

All 4 look pretty good but the only sheet that holds a bend well is the petg. The matte overlaminate has the best diffuse qualities. The coroplast is even more duffuse but soft and damages really easy.

Look on the internet for sheet plastic or sign suppliers/distributors in DC. Charlotte has 3 or 4 so I know there are plenty up that way.

The translucent sheets don't travel well so you usually only get one good show, one scratch ruins it.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Here is a link to a couple google maps and websites.

The two locations on this map are Piedmont Plastics locations:

Another good one that has locations nationwide is Laird Plastics. Their nearest location to the Washington, DC area is in Baltimore, MD. Link:

Any tips on where one can purchase the frosted translucent plastic materials in the NYC area? Not too much on the expensive side... Trying to diffuse Tv screens in a set bkgd on a low budget..
